Spotlight - Doodad

Back in October we made the trek out to the first Palm Springs Vintage Market of the season. After strolling down a few of the palm tree lined rows we saw the familiar face of one of our favorite dealers, Cameron from Doodad. At the time we were working on a custom daybed and found an incredible roll of deep navy striped fabric leaning against his van. Ended up leaving with the fabric roll as well as a set of made in Mexico mirrored glass pieces. The daybed ended up going in a different direction so we decided to use this fabric for a super limited run of Bouldering Jackets and thought it was fitting to give Doodad the first one. We went back to Palm Springs earlier this month to deliver the jacket and catch up with the man behind the shop.

How did this shop come about?

Doodad came about from a push in the direction I have always wanted to go but didn't dare. I got laid off from my 9-5 and finally took a chance on myself. I opened a store and put everything I had into my own business.

Can you highlight an item or two from the shop?

Some favorites from this grouping would be the Victoria Little John ceramics and this extremely rare green lamp from Belgium. Haven't found that lamp in any design books and believe it is likely a custom made piece.

How has your taste in design evolved over time? Have your other hobbies had any impact on this evolution?

My design taste always changes and develops according to what I take in. When I'm following the contemporary beat, it skews more singular and artisanal. If I'm feeling nostalgic for tradition and craft it shows in what I seek out and purchase. My hobbies always have an influence on my taste as well. A few of these include film, sci-fi, the mountains, and automotive design.

Visit Doodad at Urban Americana in Long Beach or at a variety of Socal Sunday markets and follow along @Doo_dad on Instagram.
